ANAW’s Impact for Animals in Africa

Whether convening judicial dialogues to curb wildlife and environmental crime, developing the Africa Conservation Education Fund to raise empathy and awareness of animal welfare issues, spearheading anti-poaching and bushmeat campaigns to demand accountability and law enforcement to protect wildlife, providing hands-on care through vaccination and sterilization clinics for companion/domestic animals and rescue operations for wildlife, or partnering with the UNEP to convene the annual Africa Animal Welfare Conference - ANAW has been at the forefront of promoting animal welfare in Africa for over a decade.

Recent accomplishments include:

(1) Working with the UNEP to develop the groundbreaking UN Animal Welfare Resolution, outlining animal welfare standards, policies, and expectations to be adopted by all member states of the United Nations.

(2) Tirelessly campaigning for a ban on the Donkey Skin Trade and the closure of Kenya’s abattoirs through news interviews, social media campaigns, and activism targeting the Kenyan Government. If the trade continues it threatens to completely wipe out this species of donkey by 2023.

(3) Drafting amendments to the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013, to more effectively address animal welfare issues arising from wildlife crime in Kenya.

(4) Conducting extensive de-snaring operations that rescue wildlife that have become tangled in the metal snares set by poachers to trap and capture endangered wildlife.

(5) Sponsoring and developing Animal Welfare Clubs in over 36 schools across Kenya. These clubs promote humane education and engage the next generation of conservationists in hands-on animal welfare activities.

(6) Facilitating capacity building for local veterinarians through partnerships with US veterinary organizations and non-profits, in addition to organizing spay/neuter clinics in Kenya and providing regular vaccinations to pets that contribute both to the health of the pets and the public at large.
