The Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) is ANAW-USA’s sister organization in Nairobi, Kenya. They are an Indigenous, Pan-African NGO working with communities, governments, partners and other stakeholders across Africa to promote the humane & compassionate treatment of all animals. They achieve this through multi-level policy advocacy, community engagement& empowerment, & education.
ANAW Programs:
Human-Animal Coexistence
ANAW works with governments and like-minded stakeholders to carry out interventions that contribute to maintaining a balance between various human practices and animal survival (biodiversity conservation). Our focus on communities is generally geared towards innovative use of technology to provide solutions to causes of conflict and placement of affordable mitigation measures.
Education, Awareness, and Capacity Building
ANAW sees education, awareness, and capacity building as the seeds necessary to create a generation of compassionate citizens who value, respect, and seek to understand animals. Through the following programs, we aim to plant the seeds of an enduring animal welfare movement in Africa:
Enhancing Inter-agency collaboration on wildlife & environmental crimes
Promoting alternatives to the harmful use of animals in research, education, and testing

Animal Care and Rescue
ANAW demonstrates a hands-on approach to upholding the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) standards on animal welfare. These are internationally accepted practices agreed upon by all UN member states to be the bare minimum for animal welfare in each country. ANAW works with various governments, communities, and stakeholders to support the enforcement of these regulations as we observe these standards in each of our program areas.
The animal welfare needs within Kenya and across Africa are enormous. Currently, specific projects being ran to achieve better care for animals include Animal Welfare Clinics, including rabies vaccination clinics and spay/neuter clinics, and de-snaring and anti-bushmeat operations and campaigns.
